OVERVIEW

Diagnostic assessment is the gathering of information at the outset of a course or program of study to provide information for both the teacher and student about students' prior understanding.  

School systems may recommend or require the use of diagnostic assessments in particular grade levels to gather information of current levels of performance prior to instruction. See an example of list of assessments used for these purposes below:

In the classroom, teachers may use a pre-assessment (which may be called a diagnostic assessment to measure student readiness for the upcoming unit or lesson. Here is a slideshow of examples.
